Job Description

Assists the surgeon, other physicians and/or patient care team by setting up and providing instruments, equipment and supplies for surgical procedures and related patient care activities. The Surgical First Assistant is trained, participates, and actively assists the surgeon and establishes a good working team. This position requires age related competencies. Performs other duties as assigned. Adheres to National Patient Safety Goals as appropriate based on the level of patient contact this position requires.

Essential Functions:

* Maintains a safe, sterile environment which includes preparing, passing, holding, inserting, removing, cleaning and assembly of instruments, equipment and supplies; counting sponges, needles, sharps and instruments; and assists the RN with delegated circulating duties, transporting, positioning, skin preps and specimen preparation.

* Performs the principals of safe positioning of the surgical patient.

* Provides visualization of the operative site during the operative procedure.

* Performs the proper techniques to assist the surgeon in providing hemostasis.

* Performs the appropriate techniques to assist with the closure of body planes.

* Expedites the operative procedure by anticipating the needs of the surgeon.

* Performs advanced skills that require knowledge of normal pathological anatomy and physiology.

* Understands procedures and provides appropriate care in emergency situations.

* Displays superior organizational skills and professional behavior / attitude.

Accountability:

Reports to the assigned supervisor and is accountable to the Clinical Director for the department. Supervised on a daily basis by the designated staff and / or coordinator in charge of the daily room schedule. May be asked to train or provide assistance to others. Assists in the training and / or orientation of other surgical technicians.

Environmental Conditions:

High exposure to hazardous risks and contaminants, including potential for exposure to infections and communicable diseases, blood and body fluids, electrical equipment, lasers, radiology and fluoroscopy equipment, needle sticks, suction splashing, chemicals, cleaning solvents - Stat IV, sterilization chemicals, hexacholorophate, betadine and sharps and wet floors. Temperatures may vary in procedure environment, may stand on hard floors or platforms, exposed to a variety of interruptions, odor, and must wear universal protective clothing. May be required to work overtime, late shifts, weekends and be on call. Potential for bodily injury related to lifting and incidents of workplace violence. Hazards will be minimized if universal safety procedures are followed.

Qualifications

Qualifications

* High School Diploma or equivalent

* Basic Live Support CPR required.

* Completion of a vocational training program or in-house training program for surgical technicians, required.

* Requires CST certification.

* Current CST/CFA Certification OR requires 8 years of experience as a scrub technician providing direct patient care and eligible to sit for the First Assistant Certification (CFA) which includes verification of 350 verified cases OR eligible as a graduate of an accredited CAAHEP CFA program with 135 verified cases.

* Requires completion of the technician orientation program and competencies, which include specific skills checklists.
